Environmental stewardship is a broad term that covers a variety of activities performed by community groups, individuals and other organizations to protect nature. The term can be used to define strict environmental conservation practices or active restoration efforts, and is practiced on both local and global scales in urban and rural areas. There are many studies on the subject. However most of them concentrate their analysis on one part of the many factors that could support or hinder environmental sustainability. These include ethics, motivations, and capacity and institutions, networks, and context. 2013; Silbernagel et al. 2015).\n<\/p>\n
The primary aspect of environmental management is direct stewardship such as planting trees, eliminating unwanted species, protecting waterways, or restricting recreation in wilderness areas. These actions could also include making people aware of the importance of environmental issues, and encouraging civic participation such as writing letters to legislators, or voting for candidates that favor thoughtful environmental policies.\n<\/p>\n
Environmental stewardship initiatives can have positive social effects and ecological ones that include restoring ecosystems that have been destroyed. These include cultural, economic, and governance outcomes. For instance, when buying food from a local farmer’s market or a community-supported agricultural program consumers are engaged in environmental stewardship by assisting the production of sustainable food and reducing the need for semi-trucks in order to transport their goods across the country (Breslow and co. 2016). In certain instances, stewardship results will be counterproductive. For instance, in indigenous communities that rely on the harvesting of large mammals for their cultural identity and livelihoods the no-take conservation model might be contrary to their overall ecological and social worldview (Clarke 1999).\n<\/p>\n
